Zumba Class: Benefits and What to Expect

I’m a 27-year-old female living a moderately active lifestyle, mostly getting my 10,000 steps a day, but you can definitely see that I still love my chocolate brownie cookies.
My mom put me in Ballet, Tap and Modern dance classes when I was 3 years old, and that is where my love for dancing started.

But only three years back I found my new passion, Zumba.

I give dance classes as a part-time job. And one class I’ve found all participants, young and old, enjoy the most, is Zumba class.

Why you should start doing Zumba

Zumba is so much more than dancing.

Studies have shown that if you enjoy your exercise routine, you are more likely to stick with it. I have so much fun dancing, I actually forget that I am exercising.

Zumba is also great for weight loss because you can expect to burn between 600 to 1,000 calories in an hour, depending on how demanding the class is.

People usually underestimate dance as a form of exercise, but it tones your entire body. When you have finished a dance class, you can feel sore in muscles you never even knew you used. Zumba gets results because it targets different muscle groups all at once for total body toning.

Zumba is a form of aerobic exercise (increases heart rate), but even more impressive is that it is also a form of anaerobic exercise which increases your cardiovascular respiratory system health.

It also gives you a good brain workout and improves your coordination. Your arms and legs are usually moving in opposite directions so you need to concentrate on what your body needs to do next. With more practice, you improve your coordination, but what is a bonus is that you feel more comfortable moving your body.

Not only does it keep me fit and active, but it also helps me de-stress. When I turn my attention to dance and away from all the daily madness, it helps me reduce fatigue, improve my alertness and concentration, and it also enhances my overall cognitive function.

Most importantly, dancing makes me happy. Every time I walk out of a Zumba class, I can feel the endorphins triggering positive feelings throughout my body.

What to expect at a Zumba class

When you walk into your first Zumba class, you can expect that the participants to be very friendly, of all different shapes and sizes, and the instructor will have a contagious energy that will rub off on even the grumpiest of people.

The class consists of mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves in the same way as an interval-style workout. It is really a calorie-burning dance fitness party.

The music consists of Latin and World rhythms that help disguise the exercises and make it effective and super fun.

Zumba was originally designed to bring different people together, and that makes it a special type of exercise class.
